Inherited WooCommerce store: stock, shipping, and payment gotchas
Inherited a WooCommerce store with messy stock, shipping zones, and payment gateways. Here is what I check first before touching live orders.

I get handed inherited WooCommerce stores more often than fresh builds. Stock lives in a spreadsheet and two plugins. Shipping zones were set up for a different country. A gateway is still in test mode. The previous developer is gone and nobody wrote anything down.
Here is what I check first before I touch live orders.
Stock truth
Open a few products and compare admin stock, the storefront, and any warehouse or marketplace sync plugin. Inherited shops often have two systems fighting. Pick one source of truth before you "fix" stock. Bulk edits on the wrong one make it worse.
Shipping zones nobody mapped
Checkout with a guest address in each country you sell to. Missing rates usually means empty zones, a table-rate plugin still pointing at old postcodes, or cache holding a blank quote. Fix zones before you blame the theme.
Payment gateways in test mode
Stripe, PayPal, and bank plugins love to arrive still in sandbox. Place a tiny live test (and refund it). Check webhooks and the order status after pay. Stuck on Processing with money taken is a classic inherited mess.
Plugin debt
List everything that touches checkout, shipping, stock, and emails. Disable non-essentials on staging first. Abandoned plugins that still fire on thank-you pages break tracking and status emails long after the original build.
When to stop poking production
If you cannot name the stock source, the live gateway, and the shipping plugin in ten minutes, get staging and a backup before more "quick fixes". Inherited stores punish guesswork.
Inherited a messy Woo shop. I calm stock, shipping, and payments so live orders stop being a gamble.
Get stock, shipping, and payments telling the same story. Then ship features. Not before.
